Find True North (II)

Use the in-built compass to make a basic digital compass that displays the current degrees away from North (0°)

You'll need

  • 1 x micro:bit
  • 1 x USB cable

Step 1

The degrees range from 0° to 359° and increase clockwise, so the cardinal directions would correspond to: East (90°), South (180°), and West (270°). However, most of the time we won’t be facing an exact cardinal direction! So instead, we’ll receive values in between the numbers above. To help you visualize, here’s a bearings mapping.

Step 2

Because we want to continuously display the updated compass reading, we will be using a forever block instead of on start. Then, from the Input drawer, look for compass heading block and place it inside show string

Step 3

Your super basic digital compass is now done! Download it to your micro:bit and for the fun of it, find true North (0°)!
